Known Liars

Arielle Silverstein and Tony Ortega

With all the talk in the news recently about whistleblowers, we thought this might be a perfect time to remind our readers about how Arielle Silverstein, Tony Ortega’s most recent wife, took it upon herself to try and quash an internal inquiry headed by United Nation’s whistleblower Peter Gallo, who had instigated a formal investigation of her organization over the matter at the time.

It all began in 2015 with allegations that certain U.N. “peacekeepers” in Northern Africa were engaging in multiple instances of child sex trafficking. The Guardian, one of the UK’s top newspapers, were first to break the story of 23 French and African U.N. peacekeepers who were credibly accused by local activists as running a front for the selling of children to be raped by those willing to pay up.

Following the publication of that story the U.N. moved quickly to protect itself, hastily suspending an aid worker who first helped bring the scandal to light.

Though the investigation into the U.N.’s alleged misdeeds and subsequent cover-up ultimately came to a close early last year without indictment, Peter Gallo believes top U.N. officials, including Silverstein herself, retaliated against the whistleblowers who tried to expose the scandal.

Indeed, when Gallo tried to reapply for his investigator’s license after the reports of the incident had been aired, Silverstein, who was then a member of the U.N.’s Management Evaluation Unit delayed his application until he lost his job at the organization.

What is it with these people and their dark need to protect sex traffickers? From our vantage point here in the closing months of 2019 it seems there are more than a few parallels between the ‘behind-the-scenes’ work Silverstein was up to and the very much ‘front-and-center’ apologetics Tony Ortega engaged in while trying (and failing!) to defend the sex trafficking empire Backpage.

Sadly, however, we find ourselves left with more questions than answers.

Silverstein claims the extraordinary 153 day delay she caused, resulting in Peter Gallo’s ultimate dismissal, was because she was pregnant at the time. Tony Ortega claims his defense of Backpage were on grounds that Free Speech is sacrosanct. Honestly, in the midst of all their contrived half-baked excuses are we really being asked to trust the words of two known liars?
