Size and Scope

For as much as we’ve talked about the dangers of Tony Ortega’s hate-blog and the work of his former employers at the sleazy sex selling site, Backpage, it could be helpful to take a moment to set each in its proper context.

For example, Tony Ortega’s ‘angry troll on the internet’ routine generates so little actual revenue that it really must be considered more hobby than ‘job’. For all the time Ortega seems to fritter away over his pet obsession, he must be making embarrassingly little money from it – what’s more embarrassing is that he is living off of his wife, Arielle Silverstein, salary.

Compare that to the ‘Adult Services’ section of the Backpage which dwarfed every other section by a substantial order of magnitude:

Indeed, Tony Ortega’s blog, while toxic with intolerance and propagandistic lies, reaches a very small audience. According to Socialblade, Ortega fell to fewer than 200 followers per month this summer and hasn’t seemed to recover. Compare that the views Backpage enjoyed during its heyday.

Both the Backpage and Ortega’s hate-blog have much in common, certainly with regards to benefitting from human misery. Tony Ortega has loudly defended both his role as micro-blogging bigot and as Editor-in-chief of an organization that ran advertisements for underage children forced into prostitution. Though one may have been on much a larger scale, inflicting more damage to individuals and their communities, Tony Ortega’s name has been on both. And that’s more than just coincidental.
