The Contagion of Weaponized Hate

Every day in this country we are subject to some form of propaganda. This technique of controlling the public thought does not just affect our citizens, but often times it affects citizens around the globe. This attempt to control the public’s thought process isn’t just something we see from governments or political organizations seeking to change public opinion. Increasingly it has become a focus of individual’s with an axe to grind based on their own private intolerance and religious bigotry.

Unscrupulous propagandists of the sort Tony Ortega’s blog regularly feature, or who pop up on our TV screens after being given a platform for their hate by the likes of Leah Remini are but two infamous examples. Though their approaches may seem varied the goal is always the same: to bring about hate and distrust in one group of people against another.

Like a contagious disease unleashed on an unsuspecting populace the germs of their hateful rhetoric spread through society, weakening us all as it further divides and separates us as a nation.

Fake news, vicious rumors, outright lies, bigoted blogging are all modern forms used to spread the contagion of “propaganda”. Those who use these techniques will commonly sow an atmosphere of fear and distrust as they try to build on that fear, steering and driving it into actions of overt hatred.

But make no mistake: what the disease is attacking is the human rights of the group or individual it has targeted. You have to remove the rights of the other person before you can humiliate, degrade and then attack them. If you don’t, you will be seen as cruel and your actions unjustified.

This is what we are seeing playing out daily among the more strident critics of Scientology. Attacks made against the freedom guaranteed in the founding documents of our country to be free from persecution based on religious belief.

There is nothing less American than an attack on freedom and yet this is exactly what Ortega and Remini are doing through their repeated propaganda-based attacks. For the wellbeing of our democracy and the good of our country they must be stopped.
