Bring Tony Ortega to Justice

On August 17, 2018,Dan Hyer, Sales and Marketing Director of Backpage.com pleaded guilty to conspiring to facilitate prostitution, Hyer participated in a scheme to give free ads to prostitutes in a bid to drive business to Backpage. Hyer is yet another Backpage employee to plead guilty. He will be sentenced in November 2018.

Michael Lacey and James Larkin, who owned the Backpage trademark attached “Backpage” online sex trafficking site to the Village Voice.  They then linked “Big City”, another sex trafficking site they owned, covertly, into the back door of Backpage. It was a move that had more than a whiff of racketeering about it. This was the enterprise defended and propagandized by former Editor inChief of the Village Voice, Tony Ortega, who once smugly bragged, “The people I work for were smart enough to start Backpage.com.”

And don’t forget these words from Ortega:

We’ve spent millions of dollars putting in place strict policies and monitoring services to make sure that it is only adults finding each other through Backpage.com‘s adult pages. Not only do we have security specialists making constant searches for keywords that might indicate an underage user, but we’re quick to cooperate with law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children when we find suspicious ads.

Ortega and his bosses lied as we have now discovered.

Why hasn’t one of Backpage’s chief propagandist brought to justice yet?
