The Rhetoric of Shameless Propagandists

In today’s world propaganda is unavoidable. We’re bombarded by it daily, all towards a singular end of manipulating opinions in the hopes of controlling action.

Through his Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, Hitler developed a system to manipulate public opinion through the power of words. As Hitler himself wrote:

Propaganda must always address itself to the broad masses of the people…The broad masses of the people are not made up of diplomats or professors of public jurisprudence nor simply of persons who are able to form reasoned judgment in given cases, but a vacillating crowd of human children who are constantly wavering between one idea and another… The receptive powers of the masses are very restricted, and their understanding is feeble. On the other hand, they quickly forget. Such being the case, all effective propaganda must be confined to a few bare essentials and those must be expressed as far as possible in stereotyped formulas.”

There’s a chilling familiarity in Hitler’s words. This is what see at work in propagandists of today like Tony Ortega and Leah Remini. ‘A few bare essentials’, the same lies told over and over again in ‘stereotyped formulas’. If you didn’t know these were Hitler’s words, you might be convinced they were straight out of the anti-Scientology playbook, as this is precisely the behavior they have sought to make a cottage industry out of.

Shameless propagandists like Remini and Ortega have for years been trying to capitalize on the American predisposition toward religious intolerance. Through their oft repeated propaganda, lies and deliberate distortions they have but one goal: to stir outrage and distrust against organize religions in general and against Scientology in particular.

The chief motivation seems, certainly in Ortega’s case, a strong atheistic rationale. ‘More people have died from religion than in all wars combined,’ the old lie goes. But it is religious intolerance, not religion, that leads men to violence. And it is hateful television shows like Remini’s and bigoted Twitter feeds like Ortega’s that exist to fuel intolerance and sway their audiences of ‘human children’ by means of the same style of propaganda the unleashed the some of the worst destruction the world has ever known.
