Tony Ortega: Idéologue

As a functional definition, an ideologue is a person who never questions the underlying assumptions of the ideology that he has adopted as his own.

An ideologue is so certain of this adopted ideology and the rightness of his own worldview that he can sneer contemptuously at people, believing himself to be superior to those he views as his ideological foes.

To call this an intellectually lazy way to go through life would be an understatement. Cognitively it is nothing more than a dead-end.

By isolating yourself from anyone who would call out your assumptions and surrounding yourself instead only by those who agree with your point of view, this intellectual laziness never gets challenged. So it is that people like this continue on in a bubble of their own willful and self-perpetuated ignorance.

The term “ideologue” is applied chiefly to political ‘talking heads’ who  robotically repeat the same party talking points ad nauseam to whoever is willing to listen, but there are a few stunning examples of hardline ideologues outside the political realm.

One of the best examples is none other than Tony “Backpage” Ortega.

Consider what unquestioned set of assumptions Ortega is operating by for him to be able to write the following with a straight face:

“Underage prostitution is a persistent problem in this country, but as we established in last week’s cover story, it exists at a level that is nothing like what is being trumpeted by Amber Lyon on the behalf of activists who want to put us out of business.”

What gives Tony the “confidence” to make such an assertion in the face of overwhelming evidence and damning statistical data from multiple governmental agencies? Where does he find the hubris to act like he knows better?

How is that that Tony Ortega thinks he has the rarified wisdom, let alone the standing, to contradict the facts?

The answer is startlingly clear: he doesn’t.

Tony Ortega understands as plainly as we do that the facts aren’t on his side.

They’ve never been on his side.

For ideologues like Tony Ortega, facts are the one enemy they never wish to confront because they are only too aware the moment they do they’ll be put out of business for good.
